Knitting Group

At Fairfield United we celebrate the small groups within our larger community – they allow individuals to make deeper connections with each other and with those in greater Victoria.

The Fairfield United Knitting Group had been going strong for approximately 10 years. We began knitting shawls to offer a ‘ warm hug’ to those going through tough times. The shawls are blessed and delivered to those in need. Our numbers are slowly growing, with an average attendance of eight people. Friendship, fun, and a chance to give back are the main aspects of our group.

Here are a couple of little stories about our amazing knitting group!

In January 2017, mini prayer shawls were distributed to the congregation on Three Kings Sunday, followed by a gift of over forty minis to the Masjid Al Iman mosque in February.

Mary Ann Sealey, who attends Fairfield United, when she is away from her home congregation in Saskatoon (St Martin’s United) told Nora Hanna that she received a mini prayer shawl when she was here in January. She took a few shawls for friends and family. Along with the instructions, she showed them to her friends in Saskatoon, and the knitting group there began making and giving them away. Mary Ann also travels to Palm Springs, where she has a community of friends, including Jann Arden. She shared the mini prayer shawl pattern there too and now those people are knitting them too.  A bonus, according to Mary Ann, is that she has also learned to knit! Way to go, Mary Ann!  As Glenda says “It’s not all about the knitting!”

The knitting group meets on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, taking turns at the homes of group members. New members are welcome, even if you don’t know how to knit. We will teach you!
